How Cambridge Brain Sciences and CBS Health Came to Be

by | May 7, 2021

One of our top MAC Brain Health Cart testing technologies, Cambridge Brain Sciences’ CBS Health brain function and health assessment tool, was profiled recently in Western News. The article includes a great summary of how the company came to be after co-founders Adrian Owen and Marc Lipton began to collaborate. In addition to being Cambridge Brain Sciences Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Owen is a professor and neuroscientist at The Brain and Mind Institute at Western University in Ontario, Canada. Lipton is also the company’s CEO.

From the Western News article:

Cambridge Brain Science MAC-CartOwen began to connect with Western’s innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, including WORLDiscoveries, the technology transfer and business development office for London’s research institutions. WD provided business strategy and mentoring on forming a startup, and this led to the formation of Cambridge Brain Sciences, which has grown to be a leading provider for the assessment of cognitive function.

Marc Lipton, co-founder and CEO of Cambridge Brain Sciences, had years of experience in venture capital, private equity and entrepreneurship. Lipton was drawn to CBS because of his own experience having had neurosurgery in 1999 and having older family members who experienced neurodegenerative disease. He believed he could take the fledgling startup to the next level.

“What’s unique and valuable about the CBS platform is that it quantifies the assessment of brain function and can be done so remotely,” noted Lipton, “complementing the qualitative assessments and judgement of healthcare practitioners and reducing reliance on traditional paper and pen tests that are typically administered in-person.”

Today Cambridge Brain Sciences has a database of more than 12 million assessment tasks, which let researchers and physicians benchmark patients’ cognitive performances against large datasets. More than 25 years of research have gone into CBS Health, and partnerships in recent years with U.S.-based health-care professionals and corporate wellness programs have been successful. was starting to see marked interest in its offerings prior to the pandemic. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, demand skyrocketed for CBS Health, because of both a need for such assessments and the way in which lockdowns forced health professionals and researchers to do more and more of their work online.

What Does Cambridge Brain Sciences’ CBS Health Do?

The web-based CBS Health cognition tests are administered by healthcare professionals to measure brain function, including reasoning, memory and concentration. It is an important concussion screening and brain health monitoring tool on the MAC-Cart. Patients can be accurately screened for symptoms of concussions and other traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). According to the article, other applications include brain function assessment for patients with neurodegenerative diseases (ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease,) as well as normal aging.
